New York, New York, January 29, 2020 – C2 Energy Capital, LLC, a rapidly growing investor in renewable energy and storage assets, announced today that its rooftop and canopy solar project with electric vehicle (EV) charging has won the Innovation Award in the category of Onsite Renewable Energy from Smart Energy Decisions, a leading online resource for commercial and industrial electric power customers. The award-winning project is located at Thomas Edison High School, a high school in Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS). Sundial Solar, a Minneapolis-based company specializing in commercial-scale solar, developed the project. Now in its third year, the Innovation Awards recognize exemplary use and implementation of innovative technologies and progressive practices among large electric power users, their suppliers, and utilities that reflect new approaches to energy procurement and management.
The school’s rooftop and canopy solar installation is 480.48 kilowatts in size and will produce approximately 601,400 kilowatt-hours of solar electricity annually. The canopy portion of the installation covers a parking lot and is part of a Sustainability Plaza that also includes two electric vehicle charging stations. The solar system will act as a laboratory for students to learn first-hand about renewable energy through a blended STEM curriculum (an integrated program including science, technology, engineering and math). The high school is a model for green practices with a state-of-the-art storm water management system completed in 2017, a community garden next to the athletic field and now the addition of the solar power system. C2 Energy Capital helped Thomas Edison High School lower its electricity costs with solar, reduce their carbon footprint, and join a growing national league of schools supporting a healthier environment in their communities.
“Minneapolis Public Schools is leading the state by example. We congratulate them and Thomas Edison High School on their accomplishments with the Sustainabiliy Plaza and the educational components they have put in place to teach students about renewable energy. We’re proud to accept this award alongside them,” says Candice Michalowicz, Co-founder and Managing Member of C2 Energy Capital.
The Thomas Edison High School solar project was fully operational in mid-2019. C2 Energy Capital sells 100% of the solar energy to the school at a rate discounted below the current utility.
“Minneapolis Public Schools is dedicated to creating an environment where students have the opportunity to gain a well-rounded education,” said MPS Superintendent Ed Graff. “The addition of this solar project demonstrates how forward-thinking projects can reduce our budget, and also broaden students’ knowledge. We’re pleased to partner with C2 Energy Capital on this innovative school building improvement.”
